In the remote, mountain villages of Nepal’s Makwanpur District, only 27% of the population has access to safe, clean water.

For generations, families—primarily women and children—have spent hours every single day trekking down steep, perilous cliffs to fetch water from uncovered natural springs. This backbreaking daily chore keeps children out of school and prevents adults from pursuing income-generating opportunities. Worse yet, untreated water sources lead to high rates of waterborne illness, one of the leading causes of death for children under five in Nepal.

Elevate Nepal is changing this narrative. Through our Makwanpur Rural Community Development Project, we build long-lasting infrastructure that delivers clean running water, biogas sanitation, and electricity directly to homes for the first time in history.

Our Next Goal: Expanding to Jyandrung & Syansirang

We are expanding our infrastructure to the adjacent mountain ridgeline, targeting the remote villages of Jyandrung and Syansirang.

  • The Scope: 88 households, home to 438 residents.
  • The Need: Villagers currently walk over an hour each way to fetch water, have limited electricity access, and lack proper sanitation systems.
  • The Solution: A complete gravity-fed water delivery system, 88 private household water taps, 88 latrines, and complete electrical hookups.
  • Project Cost: $265,238 total cost for engineering, materials, and local skilled labor.

We want to share another update with you after the devastating Bhotekoshi Flood. To date, 1,377 people have died. Over 5,000 remain missing.

I have talked with multiple partners and individuals on the ground offering our assistance. The good news is that essential relief supplies appear adequate for now, as more international assistance arrives from neighboring nations like India, China, Qatar, and the UAE.

The Nepal government continues working tirelessly to shelter displaced families while restoring critical transportation networks to re-establish vital trade routes. Beyond the staggering human cost, government estimates project nearly $5 billion in infrastructure damage, alongside extensive economic losses.

Officials continue to assess the flood impact. Director of Operations Resham Bal and our team on the ground have been actively consulting with communities in the impact zone regarding water distribution issues, an area in which Elevate Nepal specializes. We are working on plans to repair infrastructure and restore water flow from spring sources back to homes and shelters in the hardest-hit areas.

This undertaking is no easy task. We are seeking financial support for the water infrastructure initiative. Our team is heading to the impact area early next week (pending road conditions) to consult with local officials and our engineer to finalize a preliminary budget.

Additionally, we remain committed to our work in Makwanpur, continuing to bring clean water, electricity, and sanitation to these remote communities. Our goal is to build sustainable, resilient communities in Nepal where today’s residents and future generations can thrive.
